Contributing Names

Every botanical record sits under a parent, from kingdom down through family, genus, and species to variety, form, and cultivar. Because each record knows its parent, Florafolio can build the full scientific name for you and show the lineage whenever you look at a plant.

If a search returns nothing, you can add the record yourself. Choose the rank, pick the parent it belongs under, and enter just the new part of the name — the epithet for a species, the cultivar name in plain text for a cultivar. Florafolio applies the botanical conventions, so "Thai Constellation" under Monstera deliciosa becomes Monstera deliciosa 'Thai Constellation'.

You can also record the naming authority and a native range if you know them. Leave them blank rather than guessing.

A taxon can carry any number of common names, each with a language, and one of them can be marked as the primary name shown alongside the scientific name. This is where regional names belong, so the same plant can be found by whatever people call it locally.

Contributions are added to the shared index immediately and marked as unverified so everyone can see where a record came from. Verified records are shown first in search results.

Contributed botanical records are public. Your plants, notes, photos, and map positions are not.
